Phishing scams have gotten a lot more convincing, and we’re seeing more of them hit small businesses and nonprofits right here in Minnesota. One wrong click can leak private client data, freeze your systems, or even give hackers access to your whole network.

At CSI Tech Corp, we’ve helped Minnesota organizations recover from phishing attacks, and more importantly, stop them from happening again.

Here’s how to recognize a phishing email before it causes serious damage.

Common Signs of a Phishing Email:

  1. The sender’s address looks slightly off.

Hackers often create email addresses that mimic real ones, like micr0soft-support.com instead of microsoft.com. Always check the full email address, not just the name.

  1. The message sounds urgent or threatening.

“Your account will be suspended in 24 hours!” Sound familiar? Phishing emails use fear to get people to click fast. Legitimate companies rarely use scary tactics.

  1. Suspicious links or attachments.

Hover (don’t click!) over any links to see where they actually go. If the link doesn’t match the company’s real website, it’s probably a scam. And if you are NOT expecting an attachment, don’t open it.

  1. Bad spelling or strange formatting.

Professional emails don’t have typos, random fonts, or weird spacing. Phishing messages are often done. It’s a red flag.

  1. They ask for passwords or payment info.

No real IT provider, bank, or vendor will ever ask you to send login credentials or wire money over email. If you’re not sure, confirm the message with your IT team or call the sender directly.

Why It Matters More Than Ever

Phishing isn’t just about one bad email. It’s often the first step in a much bigger attack. Once hackers get in, they can:

  • Install malware on your devices
  • Steal sensitive documents or client data
  • Impersonate your staff to request fake payments (called Business Email Compromise)

Downtime, lost data, or a wire fraud scam can cost thousands, not to mention the damage to your reputation. That’s why strong cybersecurity is a must, especially for Minnesota organizations that handle legal, financial, or healthcare info.

What if someone has already clicked a phishing link?

Disconnect their device from the internet, if possible, notify your IT provider right away, and change all related passwords. The faster you act, the better.

How can I tell if an email is phishing or legit?

Check the full email address, don’t rush to click, and never send login info or payments over email. When in doubt, call the sender directly or check with your IT team.

Is security training expensive?

Not at all. We offer affordable training that fits your team and your budget, and it can save you from big losses down the road.

How often should we update our cybersecurity setup?

We recommend 24/7 monitoring, monthly updates (patching), and a yearly security review. We provide all of that as part of our managed services.

We’re a small nonprofit. Would hackers even target us?

Yes. Unfortunately, smaller teams tend to be more vulnerable to these kinds of attacks. But with the right tools and IT support, it’s easy to lock down your systems without breaking the bank. Contact us (952) 928-1788 or support@csitechcorp.com
